Profile

Toby is a full time tutor and freelance writer who has been teaching English and Mathematics for six years now. He has taught in both schools and universities in England and America, where he lived for three years. But the majority of his work has been one-on-one private tuition, a form of teaching he loves, as it gives a unique opportunity to get to know a student’s individual needs and help them make rapid progress. He has also done much work with students sitting 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form entrance exams for various schools including St Paul’s Boys School, The John Lyon School, and Latymer Upper School (where he attended himself). Toby graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature from Oxford University and then went on to earn a Masters in Fiction Writing from New York University. He studied Mathematics and Further Mathematics to A level at school and achieved top grades in both. Aside from his teaching work, he is a passionate writer, currently working on a novel. His published works include articles, essays, reviews, and study guides. Having worked for 5 years as an Examiner for OCR, he has a very good knowledge also of how English national exams are marked, and how best to prepare a student for their A Levels and their GCSEs. He has worked with two students on Oxbridge applications to date, both of whom were offered places.

Testimonials

Toby has a lovely manner, he is kind, encouraging , patient, and the lessons have been enjoyable whilst covering a lot of ground. He is clearly very bright and knowledgeable himself! He was also very patient with me if I had any doubts or queries and was always responsive to my emails and flexible when we needed to book in lessons. I really wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Toby.”
