Whatever a student’s individual strengths or subject interests, many will recognise that a strong Maths grade is essential for their future studies and career prospects. It provides essential skills in problem-solving, analysis, and logical thinking, which are transferable to many aspects of life and work. Moreover, it is a foundation for many further education and career paths, specifically in STEM fields.
Each year, Dulwich Tutors support many students with their study of Numeracy, from Primary to Key Stages 2 and 3, on to GCSE and iGCSE Maths or Further Maths, through to A level or International Baccalaureate, public examinations and beyond. Because it is a core skill, a good school should already have support in place for any student who may find Maths a struggle, but at Dulwich Tutors we find ourselves with many requests for additional help.
Independent School Entrance and Scholarship examinations always have a Maths element, and VR and NVR contain geometric, spatial and calculation related puzzles. Not every student requires support in these areas before approaching an entrance test, but familiarity with the range of question types can be secured during one-to-one tuition, in a way that builds all-important skills, confidence and speed.
As so many employers demand mathematical skills from their employees, a strong Maths GCSE or iGCSE grade can enhance job prospects and future earning potential. Pass grades or above are a prerequisite for entry into sixth form, college courses, and university entrance and may also support achievement in Science subjects that require calculations, as well as Economics and Business Studies, or vocational courses that require practical budgeting and financial management.
In some schools GCSE or iGCSE Maths may be sat in Year 10, facilitating Further Maths in Year 11. This can be challenging for students, and many seek out support from Dulwich Tutors. With a bespoke approach from the tutor and effort on the part of the student, it's highly possible to achieve strong results. One to one Maths tuition, whether in person or online, promotes a thorough understanding of the curriculum material and the ability to apply that knowledge to exam questions.
A Level or IB Maths is a highly desirable qualification, especially for students looking to pursue STEM, IT and business or finance degrees. Many universities require A Level Maths for specific courses, and it's often considered useful preparation for a wide range of subjects. A Dulwich Tutor often brings practical career-earned knowledge to a student, in a way that can complement the classroom teacher approach they encounter in school. This can influence and inspire career decisions, personal development and guide University choices.
In our experience, a high proportion of young people studying Maths at higher levels seek out support from a Dulwich Tutor, and most frequently work online which affords access to expert help, rather than just local help. Because A level and IB move fast and cover a great deal of complex content, many request tuition throughout both years of their sixth form.
Whatever the exam board; AQA, Edexcel, Cambridge (CIE), EDUQAS or IB, our tutors work to develop the analytical skills that support students towards a strong showing in examination. WJEC and CCEA are studied less frequently in the UK, but we may have tutors available who have covered them in the past, or are familiar with them.
Studies show that the typical resultant benefit of working regularly with a tutor is one grade boundary, for example a level 7 or B should become an 8 or A. In our experience, if the student is engaged with tuition, and completes practice homework or revision activity, the impact may be greater.
