Each year, Dulwich Tutors support many students to develop their English Language and Literature skills, as they study from Primary to Secondary level, from Key Stage 2 and 3 through to GCSE, A level or International Baccalaureate and beyond.
GCSE or iGCSE English are core subjects studied by all students aged 14-16 in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and beyond. On the Language side, students develop their ability both to interpret and to use structural and language techniques in an array of different contexts and text genres.
Because Literature may cover a range of set text options, focusing on poetry, plays and prose, sharing the exam board and options being studied with us is helpful, so that we can match you with the best available tutor.
Popular choices at GCSE or iGCSE include; Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, Jekyll and Hyde, The Sign of Four, An Inspector Calls, Journey’s End although there are many others. An anthology of poetry, or transactional writing, will also be studied. We have a good number of English tutors, and can find a tutor who is familiar with your set texts either in-person or online depending on your location.
The iGCSE is the international version, but some UK based independent schools favour these examinations for their course content, or the coursework elements they afford during assessment.
Whether GCSE or A Level, AQA, Edexcel, CIE, EDUQAS or IB, our tutors work to develop the analytical writing and essay skills to support students towards a strong showing in examination. WJEC and CCEA are studied less frequently, but we have tutors available who have covered them in the past, or are familiar with them.
Whether analysing text, close reading critical interpretations, or constructing well-reasoned essay arguments, all of which are essential for success in the GCSE and A Level English exams, we can match you to a tutor who is familiar with the set texts or specification being studied.
Studying English with a Dulwich Tutor can develop a student’s analytical, essay writing and critical thinking skills, which are a prerequisite for many other subjects at higher levels, as well as many careers.
They will also develop the ability to write effectively in a range of contexts, from creative, descriptive and figurative writing to formal essays, diaries, persuasive speeches and beyond. These fundamental skills last a lifetime, regardless of the encroach of AI or Grammarly.
Because of the volume of course content, and the two examinations involved, many students begin English tuition a good deal of time before summative assessments. However, exam question strategies and familiarisation may be effectively tutored much nearer the examination date, and have a large impact on performance and final grade.
Studies show that the typical resultant benefit of working regularly with a tutor is one grade boundary, for example a level 7 or B should become an 8 or A. In our experience, if the student is engaged with tuition, and completes practice homework, private reading or revision activity, the impact may be greater.
