Oliver is a qualified teacher through the Teach First scheme with over 9 years teaching experience in two Ofsted Outstanding schools. His 3 years as a teaching assistant allowed him to develop a broad understanding of how to work with children with SEND needs and ultimately made him a very effective teacher. He teaches English from KS3-KS5 and will also be able to tutor students preparing for entrance exams.
As a teacher Oliver’s timetable was often filled with getting hard to reach classes the grades they needed at English GCSE. These classes ranged from those who were on a 4/5 borderline at GCSE where there were behavioural issues but also in high achieving classes where the expectations were to achieve 8/9.
Oliver’s approach is not a one sized fits all, it must be learned through interacting with the student to understand the best way to achieve the best results possible. His experience has also included working with students who have had a range of SEND needs which include Autism, Asperger’s and Dyslexia.
Another aspect of tutoring that Oliver caters for is university applications. As a teacher he was a 6th Form tutor and this meant that over three years he had to write 20+ letters of recommendations for students as well as mentoring his tutees each year in the writing of their personal statements. One highlight of this time was when one of his tutees gained a place at Cambridge and the feedback was that the personal statement and reference were so strong.
He teaches English Language and Literature from KS3 to KS5 as well as Media Studies (where he was a Head of Media Studies for 5 years) and Film Studies from KS4 to degree level. Oliver is an outstanding teacher with excellent interpersonal skills that led him to being a much loved teacher by his students during his time in education.
Oliver left full time teaching in 2018 to become a professional writer and director in Film and Television. In the last year he has gained professional representation and has been commissioned by the BBC and Netflix for original drama programming.
