Profile
Melissa has recently been teaching English at an ‘Outstanding’ rated Primary School in London. She has experience of working with the KS1 and KS2 curriculum as well as preparing students for the 7+ and 11+ entrance exams. Melissa develops and instructs age-appropriate lesson plans which encourage creative, social, and academic growth. She prides herself on creating tailor-made, individual lesson plans which adhere to her students’ interests. She believes this allows for each student to be enthusiastic, engaged, and ready to learn in every lesson. Melissa focuses on creating a teaching environment where students feel comfortable, safe, and happy. She believes that creating this type of environment enables students to develop and reach their full potential by building confidence in their own abilities.
Before teaching in a Primary School, Melissa worked as a Program Teacher for a tutoring company in Hong Kong, after successfully completing a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course in Oxford. Within this role, she was the Head Designer and Content Writer of a Phonics Program, aimed at helping young children learn foundational English within a six-month time frame. In addition to this, she also tutored older students aged 11 – 18 in a variety of subjects. For English lessons she taught; creative writing, critical thinking, poetry, reading comprehension, grammar, exam preparation and interview preparation. In addition to English, she also taught Maths, Science, and Religious Studies. Alongside tutoring, Melissa also works for The Education and Training Foundation, a charity committed to improving and developing the quality of teaching and leadership within further education.
Melissa has recently worked with SEN children who have a range of learning, physical and behavioural difficulties. She has worked closely with Speech and Language Therapists to design and deliver specialised treatment plans for each student. She therefore has a thorough understanding of how to use methods such as Pecs and Makaton to enable development within each child.
