Profile

Hugh is a highly committed and creative tutor with over eight years experience working in various educational contexts. He has tutored a range of subjects (chiefly English, Drama and History) and has honed his approach through working with individuals of all different abilities and backgrounds.

Having tutored independently and worked in several schools for a number of years, Hugh is well acquainted with an ever evolving curriculum. He has experience teaching Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, and AS and A-Levels, and has helped prepare students for UCAS applications. He has also supported individuals through their 7+, 8+, 11+ and Oxbridge examinations, with an excellent success rate of entrance into schools including Highgate (Junior and Senior).

He has worked as a SEN Teaching Assistant (2014 – 2016), providing one-to-one support for pupils with Special Education Needs at two separate primary schools, West Hill and Christ Church Primary. Here he developed a child-centred approach to teaching, focusing on creative strategies for learning.

He has also worked as an Outreach Teacher for The Complete Works (2016 – 2017) which specialises in reengaging young people who aren’t in mainstream education. In this role he worked one-to-one with a number of young people and enjoyed merging his arts interests with his teaching experience. He followed the National Curriculum, and varied his teaching style from child to child (for example, sometimes working towards a GCSE, other times focusing on re-establishing learning in core subjects).

Hugh’s sessions are brilliant opportunities to delve further into aspects of work that might have been missed in the classroom, to extend a tutee’s knowledge in something that he or she is particularly interested in, to help with examination preparation and also to hopefully inspire and have fun.

Hugh holds a BA in Education Studies with Drama and English Literature from the University of Cambridge (2:1) and an MA in Advanced Theatre Practice from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Distinction). He has worked as an actor and director for a number of years and has performed in a range of professional productions from Billy Elliot The Musical, to Titus Andronicus at the Globe Theatre.
