An enthusiastic and dedicated tutor, Fintan has over five years’ teaching experience. His tutoring practice is built around each student’s individual aptitudes and needs, seeking to boost confidence and help them exceed their best.
Fintan has a BA in English Literature (First Class) from the University of Oxford and an MA in Contemporary Literature (Distinction) from King’s College London. As of autumn 2020 he will be an AHRC-funded PhD candidate at King’s College London. He has taught at all stages from 11+ to A Level and supported a number of successful applications to competitive London schools and top UK universities. He previously worked as a teaching assistant at an outstanding local primary school.
In his tutoring work, he values the interlocutory opportunities offered in the one-on-one learning scenario. Through a mixture of independent work, guided study and dialogue, pupils become confident, rigorous thinkers who adapt quickly to new problems and respond well to critique. He helps his students become self-reliant, independent learners, with a great appetite for their subjects. This metacognitive approach supports students to excel in examinations and assessments and become well-rounded scholars along the way. He has a broad knowledge of syllabi and exam boards. His subject specialisms are in 11+, 13+, Maths to GCSE and English up to A Level. Additionally, he offers help with essay writing, exam technique, University applications, interview prep, French, Latin and other essay subjects to GCSE.
Outside of teaching, Fintan is an avid reader, sometime poet and occasional book reviewer.
“I wanted to say that Fintan has been fantastic. He’s clearly made a significant difference and A. has enjoyed working with him. He’s a thoroughly nice young man too.” (11+)
