Emily qualified as a primary school teacher in 2013 and taught in both primary schools and as a private tutor for over four years. She has taught children from 6 years old to 11 years old, so has a very good knowledge of the progression in both the primary Maths and English curricula. She has a first class honours degree in Maths and is particularly passionate about sharing her love for the subject with children, although she thoroughly enjoys teaching all subjects at primary level. She has taught a wide range of children with varying levels of confidence in both Maths and English, and is very proud to have been told by a number of parents that, not only have they seen their child make significant progress, but that she has had a profoundly positive impact on their child’s enthusiasm for school and learning.
Her approach to tutoring is to begin with an assessment to gauge the child’s ability and confidence in each area of their age-specific curriculum. She then plans a scheme of lessons which focuses on their areas of weakness. Wherever relevant, she brings practical resources to lessons, such as place value equipment, dice, shapes, word mats, short stories. Particularly in Maths, she often designs games based on each topic which can be played at the end of the lesson for practice and reinforcement. She has successfully tutored a number of children in preparation for entrance exams to some of the top junior schools, including Westminster Under School, Westminster Cathedral Choir School, Sussex House, Colet Court, and Latymer. She has also successfully tutored girls in 11 plus exams for The London Consortium.
