Theo is a highly experienced and enthusiastic tutor who loves teaching students of all ages and abilities. He has a BA (first class) in English from the University of Oxford, and a Masters’ (merit) in musical composition from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
Most of his extensive teaching experience has come in Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-Level English (both literature and language). He is very familiar with all the exam boards commonly involved at those levels, as well as the texts which commonly crop up. His tight focus on the demands of these exams and his familiarity with the format of the papers mean that he is excellent at sharpening students’ exam technique. He has had consistent success enabling students achieve their exam grade goals.
In addition to English, he teaches various aspects of music – composition, songwriting, theory, history – and gives piano (jazz and classical) and singing lessons to grade five level. He also has experience teaching history, philosophy, politics and drama up to A-level.
He is very happy to prepare students for university applications – interview practice, the UCAS form, university tests and so on. Theo would also be an excellent choice for those wishing to be thoroughly prepared for entrance exams, particularly at 11+ and 13+ and covers all core subject areas. He has been particularly successful with students aged 11-14, preparing them for independent school entrance and scholarship English comprehension papers.
Theo’s approach to tutoring is to respond sensitively to what the particular student needs. Most of all, he helps tutees enjoy their studies, and encourages them to read beyond the syllabus.
